Baby
carriers have
been around in one shape or another since the beginning
of human history. Creative parents have designed
ways to carry their children - ranging from fabric
slings to crude packs fashioned from grass. These
makeshift carriers are a thing of the past as technology
and innovative design ideas take child transportation
to a whole new level. Lightweight metals, durable
fabrics, and superior functionality have transformed
the antiquated carrier your parents used into a wide
range of products that fit just about any lifestyle.

Why
these brands of Child Carriers?
There
are many brands of child carriers and
baby carriers available today. Selling
them all would be overlap, too confusing, and
cause chaos. We have chosen each brand for
a specific reason, as they offer something
unique and beneficial. Just about every company
wants to be on our site but we won't put them
up unless they offer something unique and never
without testing each model. Brief highlights
of each that made us want to sell the brand:
(alphabetically) |
|
Baby
Bjorn: This is a classic
line that has been tried and trued
for thousands of parents over the years. |
|
Deuter: Relatively
new to the U.S market from Europe and now
the leader in quality backpack child carriers. |
|
InStep: The cheapo on the market, but for some that's all you need for limited use. |
|
Kelty: The
most ubiquitous brand on the market. Smart
design with lots of functionality. |
|
Lafuma: Brothers Victor, Alfred, and Gabriel Lafuma started manufacturing backpacks in 1930, and the company has been a leading innovator in outdoor equipment ever since. |
|
Macpac: Macpac was born in 1973 in New Zealand, in an island nation on the edge of the earth. |
|
Premaxx: A Dutch company, Premaxx went looking through history to find a solution for today's busy parents. |
|
Sherpani: Formerly
known as Madden. Finally, a pack designed with women in mind for a perfect fit. |
|
WaterToT: Unique! Made specifically for use in water, this infant carrier offers babies and their caregivers a safe and convenient way to experience water together. |

Age Recommendations |
Back Carriers: children need to be able to sit up unassisted (about 6
months old) in order to ride in a framed back carrier.
It is recommended that the child's shoulders are below the upper edge of the seat back.
Front Carriers: when the baby is facing outward, she must be able to hold her head up unassisted (4 - 5 months). Otherwise, always have a baby face inward, toward the parent. |

Picking the Right Child Carrier / Baby Pack
Choosing a child carrier can be a daunting task.
With so many features, colors, and styles to choose from, the
process can be downright frightening. Here at ChildCarriers.com,
we have spent countless hours doing our homework to make the
process easier on you.
First thing's first. As a rule, we
believe that you get what you pay for. We have assembled the
most reputable carriers on the market because we know that
your purchase is a lasting investment for yourself as well
as your children. Our packs range in price from moderate to
expensive. If you are going to be using your carrier on a
daily basis, we recommend you spring for the top of the line
model. It will be undoubtedly more comfortable for you and
your child, and it will hold up over time. Beware of brands
not listed on ChildCarriers.com.
We pride ourselves on evaluating packs and selecting the very
best. We exclude brands that fail to meet our quality criteria.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop us a line at
info@ChildCarriers.com.
Brands:
Each brand has competitive advantages in style, cost, features
and/or accessories. You will find a convenient listing of
the features, a brief review of each carrier, and an overall
brand review on each carrier page. We highly recommend that
you take the time to read our customer reviews. Written by
real people, the carrier reviews are relevant, honest, and
insightful.
Pack
Construction:
Buying a child carrier is a lot like buying
a backpack. Similar material is used in all of the packs,
but they each have their subtleties. If you are doing long
day trips and using your pack on a very frequent basis, we
suggest the heavier duty fabric. For more infrequent use,
lighter weight materials will work just fine.
Fit:
Proper fit for you and your child is certainly something you'll
want to consider. After all, using your Child Carrier
should be an enjoyable experience for you and your kid. Most
manufacturers make their carriers for the "average"
sized kid and parent, which seems to work in most cases. Additionally,
each carrier on ChildCarriers.com
features an adjustable child cockpit - so you can adjust seat
height, width, and harness tightness to fit your kid. As far
as your fit goes, there are a variety of adjustment options
available. Some packs allow you to move the torso and waist
belt up and down, and all allow you to loosen and tighten
the straps and waist belt. To make it easier, we have laid
out all of the relevant specifications on our Fit
Chart. So, take some time to make sure you and
your child are compatible with the pack you have in mind.
Storage:
Some parents (and kids) are just not able to get out of the
house without every toy, doodad, and diaper they own. If that
rings a bell, make sure you get a carrier that has lots of
storage. Some of the carriers we sell have tons of storage
while other are streamlined for simplicity and have just a
few pockets or a zip-off pack. Keep in mind that not all pockets
are created equally, and try to look for space that will truly
meet your carrying and organizational needs. Read through
the reviews and feature lists and choose the one with the
most appropriate storage for your needs.
Sun/Weather
Shield:
Today, the sun's rays more dangerous than ever before, and now more than ever we must be practical.
Children's skin is very sensitive and needs protection from
the sun's harmful rays. Don't neglect this important feature!
Some of our carriers come with sun/weather shields included, others
have them built in ("integrated"), and almost all
are sun/weather shield compatible. If you live in a place
like Arizona or Utah and/or plan to spend a fair amount of
time with your child outside, we suggest prioritizing the
shield feature. Your child will thank you (even if your plastic
surgeon does not). Take a look at the
feature comparison chart. |
